PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy)

PRK, or Photo Refractive Keratectomy, is one of the oldest refractive procedure performed at Cherry Creek Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C. and is a trusted method of vision correction. PRK involves a reshaping of the cornea’s surface using the excimer laser to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

To correct nearsightedness, tissue is gently removed from the central parts of the cornea to make it flatter and reduce the refraction. To correct farsightedness, tissue is removed from the cornea’s outer edges to make it more conical, and thus increasing the refraction. For treatment of astigmatism various layers of tissue are removed in different directions, e.g. more vertically than horizontally.

PRK typically involves a longer healing time and slower visual recovery, so it is typically recommend only to patients with minor vision errors.

One FDA Clinical Investigation on PRK treatment for myopia found that 98.8% of patients retained 20/40 vision or better after one year!
